I Could Have Done More
Words and Music by John Lindsay
In a moment in a flash of a dream I was given a thought
By a friend or a foe, I don’t know.
This image before me: fate or warning,
Curse or blessing, night or morning.
Go away, this seed that’s been planted;
This choice I’ve been handed, burden from heaven.
Remembering is hard. Forgetting is easy.
I could climb to the top or fall back to sleep,
And dream a new dream; sing an old song,
But I won’t be contented for long.
I could have done more. Could have loved longer.
Taken the time, followed the signs, known You were true.
How was I to know You would wait so long?
How could I believe You’d forgive every wrong?
Father I’m here now, standing before You.
Change me as only You can.
Guide me. I’m lost without You.
Mold me with Your loving hand.
As I choose to be a star in the darkness
To shine. Oh, I’ll shine.
A guiding spark of heavenly truth
That I’m Yours, and You’re mine.
It may appear that I’ve fallen
When I’m down on my knees, face to the floor.
It’s there at Your feet I’ll place my burden
And take up the cross that You bore.
They won’t know where I’ve gone, but I won’t be sleeping.
They’ll know me not as they knew not my Father.
They’ll see me not as they pass by their blessing,
But I’m there. Oh, I’m there.
I won’t hide the word that comes from the author.
Won’t rest when there’s work to be done.
It’s time to awaken. I choose to awaken.
I choose to remember. That’s how battles are won.
